Hirofumi Daimatsu, born on February 12, 1921, in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, was not just a volleyball coach; he was a political figure as well, serving as a member of Japan’s House of Councillors. His journey began at Nichibo Kaizuka, where he led the team to an astounding 175 consecutive wins, including a victory at the 1962 Women’s World Championship and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, making him a national hero.
His coaching style was revolutionary yet controversial. Known as ‘The Demon Daimatsu,’ he demanded absolute commitment from his players, with training sessions extending from the afternoon well into the early hours of the morning. His relentless approach even drew protests from Nichibo’s labor union due to its intensity. Yet, behind this demanding facade was a man who deeply cared for his players, earning their trust and respect despite the grueling practices.
