不可能を実現した偉人、沖縄の歴史、バレーボールの可能性
マーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニア博士がアフリカ系アメリカ人の市民権を解放したように、ガンジーがイギリス統治下のインドを変えたように、私はバレーボール、英語、インターネット、そしてChatGPTのようなAIの力を通じて、沖縄の地域社会と在沖米軍人との間の隔たりを埋めることを目指しています。2025年までに、沖縄に新しい独立したバレーボールリーグを設立する計画です。そのリーグの名前は「ナナサンマルリーグ」といい、1978年7月30日に沖縄の交通法がアメリカ式から日本式に変わった、沖縄の人々にとって重要な日を記念しています。
歴史的に沖縄は、日本、韓国、中国などの国々と独自の外交戦略を展開し、琉球王国として独立していました。これは外国の外交官に対するもてなしの文化を育み、沖縄の独特の文化的アイデンティティを形作りました。このアイデンティティは、相互尊重と理解に根ざし、他者の文化を受け入れながら発展する琉球王国の成長のアプローチを反映しています。私は、この共感と文化的適応能力が、琉球王国から現代の沖縄県に至るまでの沖縄の真のアイデンティティだと信じています。政治的変化や外部からの影響にもかかわらず、沖縄がこのアイデンティティを保持していると信じています。
現在、沖縄は多くの米軍基地を受け入れ、極東の平和と日本全体の利益のために多大な犠牲を払っています。しかし、私の目標はこれらの基地の撤去や削減を訴えることではありません。むしろ、沖縄の人々と在沖米軍コミュニティとの間の深い溝に関心を持っています。
2019年から2021年にかけて、バレーボールの発祥地であるアメリカでコーチとしての経験を積んだ際、私は外国人として現地の人々から多大な助けを受けました。この経験から、直接的な交流の価値を学びました。ナナサンマルリーグでは、沖縄の選手と外国人選手、特にアメリカ人を集め、彼らの英語コミュニケーション能力を高め、より深い関わりを促進することを目指しています。私たちは、沖縄の歴史や感情を直接共有し、アメリカ人の間で沖縄への愛情を育みたいと考えています。
ナナサンマルリーグは、プロフェッショナルクラブチーム「琉球78ers」を形成するための第一歩です。このチーム名は、フィラデルフィアの76ersへの敬意を表し、沖縄の歴史上の重要な日を反映しています。このチームは、アメリカ人選手を含むことでしょうが、地元沖縄とアメリカで愛されることを願っています。プロの選手が英語で交流する姿を見せることで、沖縄の子どもたちの言語の壁を低くし、私たちと外国のコミュニティとの間の見えない壁を徐々に解消したいと思います。
沖縄は経済や教育の面で課題に直面していますが、インターネットの可能性を活用し、グローバルで成長志向のマインドセットが現れつつあると感じています。
沖縄の子どもたちと在沖米軍人の子どもたちが一緒にバレーボールをする姿を見るまで、私は満足しません。沖縄で世界最高のプロクラブチームが誕生するまで、私は満足しません。
私には夢があります！沖縄が世界で最もグローバルなマインドセットを持つ土地になることを夢見ています。沖縄が変われば、日本が変わります。そして、日本が変われば、世界が変わると信じています。
“Like Martin Luther King Jr. liberated the civil rights of African Americans, and Gandhi transformed India under British rule, I aspire to bridge the divide in Okinawa between the local community and the U.S. military personnel through volleyball, English, the internet, and the power of AI like ChatGPT. By 2025, I plan to establish a new independent volleyball league in Okinawa, named the Nanasanmaru League. This name commemorates July 30, 1978, a significant day when Okinawa’s road traffic laws transitioned from American to Japanese style, symbolizing a major shift for the Okinawan people.
Historically, Okinawa was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, engaging in unique diplomatic strategies with nations like Japan, Korea, and China, never fully aligning with any but maintaining balance. This fostered a culture of hospitality for foreign diplomats, shaping Okinawa’s distinct cultural identity. This identity, rooted in mutual respect and understanding, echoes the Ryukyu Kingdom’s approach to growth – not self-centric, but evolving by embracing others’ cultures. I believe this trait of empathy and cultural adaptability is Okinawa’s true identity, carried through from the Ryukyu Kingdom to modern-day Okinawa Prefecture. Despite political changes and external influences, I trust Okinawa has retained this identity.
Currently, Okinawa hosts numerous U.S. military bases, sacrificing much for the peace of the Far East and Japan’s overall benefit. However, my goal is not to advocate for the removal or reduction of these bases. Instead, I’m concerned about the profound gap between Okinawans and the American military community.
During my coaching stint in America, the birthplace of volleyball, from 2019 to 2021, I, as a foreigner, received immense help from locals. This experience taught me the value of direct interaction. With the Nanasanmaru League, I aim to bring together Okinawan and foreign players, especially Americans, enhancing their English communication skills for deeper engagement. We will share Okinawa’s history and sentiments directly, fostering a love for Okinawa among Americans.
The Nanasanmaru League is a stepping stone to forming a professional club team, the Ryukyu 78ers, named in homage to Philadelphia’s 76ers and reflecting the significant date in Okinawa’s history. This team, likely comprising American players, will hopefully be cherished locally and in the U.S. By showcasing professional players interacting in English, I want to lower the language barrier for Okinawan children, gradually dissolving the invisible walls between us and foreign communities.
Okinawa faces challenges in economic and educational standings, but I see a global, growth-oriented mindset emerging, fueled by the internet’s capabilities.
I won’t be satisfied until I see Okinawan children and those of American military personnel playing volleyball together. I won’t be satisfied until the world’s best professional club team is born in Okinawa.
I have a dream! To see Okinawa become the land with the most global mindset in the world. I believe if Okinawa changes, Japan changes. And if Japan changes, the world changes.”
